Bernal reported back to Combined Ops in London that the work already done in Canada combined with ice-reinforcement data from the American and English labs “had not brought to light any insuperable or unexpected difficulty in constructing the vessel.” His overly optimistic report did not fully appreciate the more conservative position developing in Canada about the feasibility of building a full-size Habbakuk. In British military circles, it was assumed that the first bergship would be completed and launched to do battle in the mid-Atlantic by the spring of 1944.
